I have to deliver''</span><br /><span style="" font-size:="">DEHRADUN: In the three-and-a-half years of its infancy, Uttaranchal has seen three director-generals of police take on the baton. In that time the force has been embroiled in one controversy after another.There was a scandal over recruitment of sub-inspectors, a sex scandal involving cabinet minister Harak Singh Rawat and the recent police misbehaviour in Haridwar. </span><br /><br /><span style="" font-size:="">Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharyya, now the state''s top cop and India''s first woman DGP, has a daunting task to overhaul a force struggling with its image. In an exclusive interview to The Times of India at her office in Dehradun on Friday, she said she wants public support to improve policing.</span><br /><br /><span style="" font-size:="" font-weight:="" bold="">You have been handed over the mantle of DGP under not very normal circumstances. How far do you agree with this observation?</span><br /><br /><span style="" font-size:="">I haven''t gone into the background of all these things. I have so much in the present. And I think I will take it up from here.</span><br /><br /><span style="" font-size:="" font-weight:="" bold="">The Chief Minister has made no bones about the fact that your services have been enlisted to inject fresh blood into a derailed system. Surely this is a morale booster for you?</span><br /><br /><span style="" font-size:="">Yes. It''s also a responsibility. I have to deliver. I am in a hurry myself. But I need to see the situation and go about it in a planned and systematic manner.</span><br /><br /><span style="" font-size:="" font-weight:="" bold="">What proactive measures do you plan to tackle law and order?</span><br /><br /><span style="" font-size:="">I haven''t yet analysed it very much. I want to first understand the situation and then take it up from there. On the proactive front there are tried and tested methods such as alertness, supervision, good intention etc plus sensitivity and a concern for a clean administration.</span></div> </div>
